CANVAS ON EDGE

Art that moves you

ABOUT US

Hallman and Stum, showing both nationally and internationally are a Pacific Northwest based artist duo, that merge talent and vision to create multifaceted sculpture. They find inspiration from patterns and gradients in the natural world. The duo also combined their names Stum and Hallman to create Stallman. While creating, one acts as the right side of the brain and the other the left. This union dissolves the boundaries of what is possible turning the ordinary into extraordinary.

Canvas on Edge – Stallman is pioneering a new technique and new art form using paint and canvas as sculpture, naming this body of work Canvas on Edge. They are taking canvas and paint and giving it a creative edge. Canvas has been given the leading role, creating form, highlight and movement.

Excavated Paintings by Jason Hallman – My paintings are layered one on top of the other, building up a timeline of acrylic geology. The field is then excavated and carved revealing layers and visions from the past. Color and textures emerge from this archeological dig as I search for a new truth and create a new story. CANVAS ON EDGE SERIES

Flow

Flow explores rhythmic movement through wave-like forms that generate continuous visual motion across the surface. Moving shadows and reflected color create an optical illusion, as if the work is subtly breathing. This form also allows two distinct color palettes to exist at once, shifting as the viewer moves left to right. The composition becomes an immersive landscape inspired by the natural currents of wind, water, and unseen energy.

Conic

Conic explores how countless small parts can collectively form a greater whole. In this style, painted canvas strips are tightly hand-rolled into prismatic cones, each with a unique aperture and a meticulously painted gradient along the 1mm cut edge. Gathered by the thousands, these individual elements come alive, unfolding into a coral like structure that truly comes live. The painted front edge of the canvas exhibits a separate color palette when seen from the front and disappears from the side offering a unique and powerful chromatic shift.

Flourish

Flourish is composed of hundreds of floral loops that weave and branch into arcs of bursting petals, unfolding in a fractal rhythm of repetition and growth. Color blooms outward through ombré transitions, forming a lush bouquet of texture, depth, and movement in an immersive celebration of the wild abundance of the natural world.

Bottom of Page Section for Keywords

The cut edge of the canvas creates an elevated line drawing and when seen at an angle, fields of color emerge as your perspective to the piece changes. [LINK TO AVAILABLE WORKS] Each length of painted canvas is bonded to itself and to the background creating a rigid structure within the frame. The hue of the painted canvas reflects on the background creating a spectrum of color. By using reflected light, pigment and structure they multiply the hues and tones within each sculpture.
